"Nightmare on Merchant Street" and Escape Room by "Artists of the Underworld"

In October, on the last two Fridays and Saturdays of the month, we presented our 2nd year escape room and art show. Each group of up to 8 people had 40 minutes to solve puzzles created by a group of our artists. The “Artists of the Underworld” escape room was designed by some of our amazing artists ranging from ages 12 and up. On the last night at 8:45 pm, we had a silent auction of select one-of-a-kind pieces used in the escape room.

Leading up to the event, our artists with talents in sculpting, photography, painting, writing and drawing met twice per week for planning. During these meetings, we had to learn to listen to one another while also accepting that not all ideas were going to be used. Furthermore, we were able to socialize and offer a safe place to discuss issues we were dealing with in our day to day lives.

Our other artists who were not involved in the direct planning of the escape room, participated by creating art pieces for the “Nightmare on Merchant St.” art show and silent auction. These pieces in turn helped to hide some of the clues. There were also volunteers that helped bring everything together to add special touches to create a memorable experience during the event, such as performance acting. Everyone enjoyed putting this event together and are already excited about next year

The Escape Room was very well done. The entire group was held ‘CAPTIVE’ trying to find the escape phrase which was “From the darkness comes the light”. We found clues in vases, books, behind paintings and for 40 minutes we were not able to put it together all the while being entertained by the talented performers of the room. It’s a great way to start Halloweening!
