What is Merchant Street Art Gallery of Artists with Autism?
"What is Autism Spectrum Disorder?"
"What does it mean to be Autistic?"
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Autism are synonymous terms for a group of complex disorders in brain development. These disorders can result in struggling with social skills, difficultly expressing oneself either verbally or nonverbally, and repetitive actions, to varying degrees. Autism can also be associated with intellectual challenges, difficulties in motor control and attention, and physical health issues such as sleep and gastrointestinal problems. However, many individuals excel in math, music, and art.
The purpose of the Gallery is to advance the careers and personal growth of artists with a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) who visit it. The Gallery also presents high quality works of art to the public as a way for its artists to pursue professional careers.
People on the Autism Spectrum can have real careers in art or music, not just because they are autistic but because their work is exceptionally good. By showcasing great art by artists with ASD and by offering classes and programs, Merchant Street Art Gallery of Artists with Autism hopes to help these artists pursue professional careers in art.
